Frequently Asked Questions

Electric Underfloor Heating Systems

Who manufactures the Ecofloor, Ecofilm And Ecoflex products ?

The products are supplied direct from Flexel International Ltd. for whom The Floor Heating Warehouse are the main appointed distributors.
Flexel International Ltd. have been the leading manufacturers of floor heating products for over 30 years. From their production facility in Scotland (30,000 Sqr feet of office and factory space), heating elements, heating cables and appliances are exported to more than 20 countries throughout the world.

What assurance can you offer customers regarding quality ?

All too often customers are supplied with inferior products in order to keep prices low. So at The Floor Heating Warehouse, we rigorously test each product on site, and only once we are personally satisfied of its ability to cope with its required task, will we consider it for inclusion in our sytems.

The thermostat for example, is the key component of any floor heating system, so must be chosen with care. Having tried and tested some of the many versions available, we settled on offering 4 versions. The industry leading Aube model, and the stylish and efficient Heatmiser version, the efficient and user friendly Tegs thermostat and the EB100 thermostat. Of all the models tested, these were the only 4 that stood up to the challenge and continued operating flawlessly.

Can I install the system myself ?

All systems are designed to be compatible for diy. They are supplied with a comprehensive installation manual, providing step by step instructions. The final electrical connection should be made by a qualified electrician.

Are systems guaranteed ?

Yes. All mats, cables and heating elements have a 10 year manufacturers guarantee. Thermostats have a 2 year guarantee.

When purchasing a kit will i need anything else ?

No, our kits include everything you will need to install your complete system.

Is there any maintenance work required ?

No. Systems are maintenace free.

Can I lay mats and cables directly onto the existing floor ?

It is advisable to insulate the floor first using specialist floor insulation, the system can then be laid directly onto this. Floor insulation will speed up heating times and reduce running costs. Mats and cables can be layed directly onto the concrete or wooden floor, but some heat will be lost into the sub floor.

How hot will the floor get ?

Our 160 watt systems are designed to achieve an operating temperature of 26 to 28 degrees c.

How will thermal insulation boards improve the performance?

A high quality thermal barrier will slow the process of heat loss into the sub-floor, significantly improving the performance of an under floor heating system, speeding the initial warm up times and reducing the electricity costs.

How do I fix thermal insulation boards to the sub-floor?

For cement sub-floors, thermal insulation boards are fixed to the floor using a continuous layer of any good quality fast setting , water based (solvent-free) floor tile adhesive, in the same manner as tiles would be fixed to the floor.
For wood floors care must be taken to ensure that the floor is firmly fixed to the joists, following the recommended 300mm screwed centres as a guide, prior to applying the flexible floor tile adhesive and bonding the thermal insulation boards.

Before laying the heating system, tape the joints of the insulation using 'High Specification Adhesive Tape' (available on the 'Accessories page').

Is there any special adhesive I need to use to tile over thermal insulation boards ?

Yes, for cement sub-floors a fast setting flexible floor tile adhesive will be required. The special polymers added to flexible adhesives will make allowances for any tile floor movements through heat expansion and contraction.
Don't forget to also add a flexible grout to your list.

If I use thermal insulation how quickly can I expect my heated tile floor to get warm?

This depends on a number of factors like the sub-floor type and thermal insulation: a cement sub-floor will be slow to warm without a thermal insulation barrier, creating a significant drag on the performance of the under floor heating. A layer of high quality thermal insulation will have a dramatic effect in these circumstances, speeding up the initial warm up times to within 15-20 minutes.

Can I tile straight on top of thermal insulation boards ?

Where normal foot traffic is anticipated, thermal insulation boards can be tiled without any special preparation, using any good quality flexible floor tile adhesive.
Even without under-floor heating these tiles will be warmer as a result.
